The project begins with Thoreau’s reflection on an essential, autonomous way of life closely connected to nature, translating it, 172 years later, into the context of collective housing. The building is conceived as an infrastructure for living together, a small neighbourhood where coexistence is a possibility rather than an imposition, and where the intimate and the collective find their balance. Courtyards, galleries, dwellings and terraces create a gradual transition between public and private realms, transforming circulation spaces into places for neighbourly interaction. The through-dwellings, adaptable and open to the outdoors, incorporate light, ventilation, vegetation and private outdoor spaces capable of responding to different ways of living. A flexible, Mediterranean and environmentally conscious architecture that seeks to recover, through collective living, that essential aspiration of living better with what is necessary.
