Considering the complexity of the emplacement (geometry, rights of way, existing party walls, archaeological excavation and debatable zoning regulations) and the obvious determination to make the most of the site, the project focuses on transitional areas between the public and the private. By concentrating a large amount of the surface area in two ‘arms’ covering the deep party walls with the neighbouring buildings, we succeeded in narrowing the main volume and thus freeing up a central garden space onto which all the homes face. From the street, a large entrance opens right through to this garden space, which is visible from the outside of the building, reminiscent of glimpses of old inner courtyards one catches when walking around some cities. Each home has a longitudinal terrace giving onto the street, consequently turning the façade into a screen between the building interior and the city, while also acting as a thermal and sun screen that qualifies the interior space of each house.
