This centre for the local sport of pilota is inserted as a feature within the topography. The site is filled in by a semi-underground platform for spectators and public. The various playing courts are perforated into this platform, demarcating raised ‘streets’ and ‘squares’ offering vantage points to view matches in progress. The ancillary spaces for sportspersons, plus the services area, installations and a car park are delimited within the walls separating the various courts. This plinth is covered by a single enclosure, a bright public space protected by a 65m-span structure. The roofing consists of consecutive, translucent layers, through which the air can pass and large slats forming a mesh of shadows, reminiscent of cane matting that filters and directs the natural light.
