Starting from a volumetric layout with no leeway, and determined by the regulations governing this city of world heritage, the project focuses on the creation of a public space in itself. Thus, its function of “feeding the city” takes place in both the commercial and urban sense, in a two-way bond, which results from the strong cultural and characteristic role that is often found in this type of buildings. Each of the three levels of the defined volume is conceived as different public landscapes: the market-square, the souk and the roof-square, all linked by an ascendant space that serves as a vertical street. On a more symbolic level, the market’s envelope proposal refers to the use of the building itself, as a small nod to the everyday role it plays in the lives of its users. The tea-wood, excellent local pine tree wood that has been used to build the most important architectural heritage of Tenerife and La Laguna, is woven in a lattice manner and is used to configure the enclosure of the new building; symbolizing the great shopping basket that the market represents in the city.
